Meet the Counselor

  • Sara Wiles

I love being the School Counselor at Anchorage Public School! I joined the Anchorage team in 2015. I also grew up in Anchorage and went to school here from Kindergarten through 8th grade. It was a dream come true to return to Anchorage as a member of the staff!

Before counseling, I taught 2nd grade in Fayette County Public Schools.  It was through teaching that I discovered my desire to be a school counselor.  After my 3rd year of teaching, I went to graduate school to earn a Master of Arts in Counseling from Wake Forest University.  I then taught for 4 more years before coming home to Anchorage.

My husband, Zac, and I live in Anchorage and enjoy raising our three young daughters here!

    Individual Counseling
Your School Counselor sees students from all grade levels for individual counseling* about a variety of subjects.  Students often ask to see our counselor, and teachers and families also request that the counselor see students.

*Individual Counseling in the school setting takes the form of student support and intervention.  It is not to be used as a regular therapeutic practice.

    Small-Group Counseling
Small-group counseling typically consists of a group of 3 to 5 students.  These students will be paired together because they are dealing with or working on similar topics (from grief, divorce, friendship skills, to study skills).

    Class Counseling
Kindergarten through 5th-grade students typically receive two 30 minute counseling lessons a month. Counseling topics may include (but are not limited to) bullying prevention, kindness, friendship skills, career education, respect, honesty, sharing, celebrating diversity, and more.

6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students typically receive counseling lessons through their regularly scheduled Writing classes.  All middle school students will receive lessons on suicide.
